Along the road to Sveti Ilija - part 1

November 25, 2014  •  Leave a Comment
My own "adventure movie" has just begun and the "treasure" that I got wind of "down the pub", is the mountain trail to the monastery of Sveti Ilija (Saint Elijah), passing the old fortress Carevi culi.

The trail begin at the end of the street Neretva, so I'm searching my way up, along the ascending streets of the "old Strumica". At the top, proclaims one of the city's blue street signs the name I am looking for. The street takes, liked promised, me to the trail and after only a few dozen meters along it, opens an excellent view of the town of Strumica and the Strumica valley. But it's a 35-degree day in mid - August and the sun grills merciless here right at the beginning, so I will continue into the shade along the mountainside. The trail offers then mostly beneficial shade, in the first half, at least in the morning. A street extends into the valley and turn entourage below me for a while.

I meet middle-aged on promenade, and jogging younger people, listening to music, streaming from smart phones attached to the upper arm. I am passing benches with old men - maybe talking about "the good old time". And so families. Many parents keep small children tightly in their hand. But sometimes a little kid comes walking free, who is "a bit" too small, for you to feel completely calm when you see it, because the trail lacks protective fence in many places. Unfortunately is not safety-thinking one of Balkans strengths. The first half of the road is relatively smooth and fine to walk, but still requires constant attention on where you put your feet - if there is to be a happy finih to "adventure film".

End of part one.. "Dont miss the next episode" ;) Coming up soon.
