Time for Strumica Carnival today

It is time for the year's biggest event in Strumica: The Carnival. Of days in advance can tell that it is coming because the whole town is enlivened by the preparations and the many guests arrive. The central parts of the city bustling with life and shopping is booming, when everyone rushes to procure what they need for themselves and their guests. The Carnival has dating back to pagan times, but mentioned in writing since the 1600s. It´s held yearly marking the start of the Lenten fast. That starts in sundayeve of Forgivness and last until wednesday. Thereafter starts the carnival, traditionally iin Thursday but this year in Saturday.

The long procession of participants in creative and often colorful costumes, made by the participants themselves, drag through the streets to finally reach the main square for a performance, often with dancing. The whole town, along with the media follow all its stages.

Below: some of my carnival pictures from last year.
